Making of a Collection
The International Gift Show in New York is fast approaching so here at PATCH NYC HQ we are in the midst of finishing our newest collection which means the studio looks like it was hit by a tornado of fabric, beads, chains, frames, pillows, paints and a sketchpad or two.
The design process for a new collection is when we gather together all the bits of inspiration we’ve been carrying around in our noggin or pinning to the bulletin board or piling on the worktable since our last collection and mix it all up with our own ideas to create something new.
It is an exciting time creatively because the possibilities are endless and unpredictable. Many times an initial concept will go through numerous permutations before we are satisfied with the design and, often, the final piece is nothing like the original plan.
Sometimes the process is frustrating like when an idea that looks amazing in our mind just doesn’t quite translate in real life.
Fortunately, this often leads us in another direction which is always exciting even if it tends to happen in the wee hours of the night. When we are designing a new collection, caffeine is our friend.
Of course, if this was a made for television movie, we would be working in a wide open, sparely furnished studio with amazing skylights and floor to ceiling arched windows with views of Paris. We would be wearing berets and striped shirts as we lounge on overstuffed leather chairs with sketchpads propped on our knees, our hands deftly sketching amazing creations that miraculously morph into three dimensional objects as the music builds. We would, of course, be played by two incredibly handsome (and young) actors.
Unfortunately, the reality is a tad less romantic but the process is still wonderful and we are super excited about this latest collection.
The creative juices are flowing big time here at PATCH NYC so much so that it’s more like a flood of creativity has filled our studio but we’re treading water just fine amongst the floating fabric, beads, chains, frames, pillows, paints and a sketchpad or two.

Designers Don Carney and John Ross are masters at making decadent chunky jewelry full of vintage goodness, sophisticated but not posh scarves and cushions and blankets that will make you crave a rainy day.
